Despite our current descent into socialism, I’m optimistic that the backlash will be even greater. There are already encouraging signs — and not only in the U.S.
Daniel Hannan, a British member of the European Union parliament, gave a blistering short speech indicting the economic policies of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. I highly recommend you click on the link above and watch the video. On his own blog for London’s Daily Telegraph, Hannan describes the reaction to his speech.
Twenty-four hours ago, I made a three-minute speech in the European Parliament, aimed at Gordon Brown. I tipped off the BBC and some of the newspaper correspondents but, unsurprisingly, they ignored me: I am, after all, simply a backbench MEP. When I woke up this morning, my phone was clogged with texts, my email inbox with messages. Overnight, the YouTube clip of my remarks had attracted over 36,000 hits. By today, it was the most watched video in Britain.
How did it happen, in the absence of any media coverage? The answer is that political reporters no longer get to decide what’s news.
What he said to Brown could as easily be applied to Obama, only ten-fold. The reaction to his speech, and the fact that it went viral so quickly (thanks to Youtube and the Internet), are all positive signs. Because of the Internet, the mainstream media has far less power to decide which opinions get heard and which get suppressed.
